The Charles Evans Whittaker Award was established by the Lawyers Association in 1976 to honor Justice Whittaker, a founder of the Association and an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. This award is presented to those persons who, on a national and local basis, have promoted the welfare of the public and the bar, encouraged cordial relations among the members of the bar, advanced the science of jurisprudence, supported the administration of justice and aided and supported the courts in the administration of their rules governing the practice of law.

LAKC will present the 2016 Whittaker Award on September 21, 2016, to two recipients: Mr. Theodore Olson and Mr. David Boies. We invite you to join us for a luncheon to recognize these two outstanding attorneys.  Mr. Olson and Mr. Boies, former litigation adversaries in Bush v. Gore, bridged the partisan divide and collaborated on the same-sex marriage and civil rights issues in Perry v. Schwarzenegger, which led to the U.S. Supreme Court’s seminal Obergefell v. Hodges decision. LAKC’s mission is to encourage our lawyers to be cordial and informed leaders, and with this Award, LAKC will shine a light on their example and offer an alternative to what many see as an unnecessarily unpleasant political climate. LAKC is thrilled to promote bi-partisanship, professionalism, and collegial respect and to illustrate how people across the political spectrum can behave civilly and find common ground.

Event Details:

11:30 - Noon Cash Bar

Noon - 1:15pm Luncheon and Presentation of Whittaker Award

Scheduling note: We are aware that this luncheon falls on the opening date of the Missouri Bar Annual Conference and was only scheduled as such due to the limited availability of our honorees. We did discuss with the MO Bar prior to scheduling the luncheon and were assured that it would not conflict with substantive programming. Whittaker Award attendees can attend the luncheon and have ample time to travel to attend the conference, which will be held September 21-23.
